When I came into the house yesterday afternoon, Judy called my attention to CNN, where they were reporting on an earthquake in southwest China. That is where I am headed. And this in a country where thousands have died in one earthquake.
Take a deep breath.
A few minutes on the internet and things came into perspective. The epicenter appeared to be about 300 miles or so to the southwest of Emei Shan. Hundreds had been injured, but I saw no reports of deaths. This morning, there was no report in the Press Enterprise on it at all. It must not have been as big a disaster as it at first sounded.
Overnight, Andy, the wonderful proprietor of the Teddy Bear Hostel (where I will stay in Emei Shan) had answered yesterday's email about the unrest in Urumqi. The city is closed at this time. So, I don't know what I need to do. Fly over it directly to Almaty, Kazakhstan? Hope for it to reopen? (It will be two weeks before I get there.) If it does reopen, take a train or bus from there to Kazakhstan? Who knows?
In this morning's email (sent, I assume some twelve hours or more after the earthquake), Andy did not mention the earthquake at all.
Time to stop fussing, and go get packed.
Alex
