Rainy Day in Beijing

I ran into Bob, Alson, and Ralph yesterday in the Forbidden City. (As I see you have heard about.) What are the odds of running into somebody by chance on the other side of the world.  Small world, isn't it.

Their trip is going fine, as is mine. We were all a little bothered by the steady drenching rain that started about 5:00 in the morning, and continued through until about noon. Then it tapered off, only to return later in the afternoon. I abandoned my plans to go to the Great Wall instead figuring with the rain, it would be a museum day. Little did I realize that the museum was the Forbidden City itself. Instead of walking around all day indoors looking at various artworks, I spent the morning walking the some of the exhibits in the Forbidden City. But really,  the whole huge palace is the exhibit. So, no way around it—I spent a lot of time outdoors in the rain.

After a morning in the Forbidden City, I saw the Temple of Heaven, and over to the ancient observatory (where I bumped into the three fellow RAS bloggers again, and met Ralph's roomie John).

I spent the evening with some really nice people. (Dinner is above). My nephew Justin, and a few of his friends who have been working in Beijing for the last few years, and some Chinese friends of theirs went out for a really good dinner. Today the Great Wall, and an overnight train to Xian.

Hi Alex, I am Judy's friend Mary Payne--what a trip! The transportation is a real eye opener--loved the sleeper bus! and comments I read about being the furthest place on earth from the ocean--what a concept! My sister's husband went to Iran a few years ago for an eclipse. I live in Cedar City, Utah and a solar eclipse will be happening here in the near future--see you then! I can recommend a few good hotels. Sounds like your trip to the "twilight zone" was amazing. Mary Payne
