As Ralph reported on his blog, we have bugged out of Shanghai. The weather prospects were dismal. Online services reported that it would be raining at eclipse time. Jay Anderson told me that he thought the chances of anyone seeing it from Shanghai were less than 10%. Still, the group of 320 were preparing to move the observing site an hour south in hopes of improving that slightly.
In reviewing all of the available data and consulting with Jay, we concluded we could improve those odds to a 30% - 40% chance by moving to Wuhan, a city about 450 miles west of Shanghai. Getting there used most forms of transportation. We took a 30 minute subway ride from our hotel to the Maglift train. Then, we rode that to the Shanghai International Airport. We caught a flight to Wuhan, and took a taxi to the hotel.
We are now hold up waiting for dawn with the hope of seeing a spectacular event.
